We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Homenetmen London Ladies Basketball team in their triumph at the 2005 Geneva tournament. We are sure you will all join us in wishing the team continued success. We know they are a very strong team and will continue to make us proud.
Homenetmen London Executive Committee's aims are to create opportunities for the Armenian youth in London to participate in various sports activities not limited to Football and Basketball.
It should be the target of our Sports Committee not only to encourage participation, but to create the correct conditions for the disciplined development of our various teams so that we can win tournaments.
Finally, we would like to remind all of our members that our organisation is made up of sportsmen and women, scouts, general members, fundraisers and mature members. We would like to encourage everyone to support and participate in each other's activities for the greater success of Homenetmen London.
Come along to our activities and events, bring your family and friends and always be on the look out for new opportunities for expansion.

Men's Basketball - A season of failure?
2004-2005 season was supposed to mark the return of a new, improved, dedicated and a more impressive Homenetmen Men's basketball team to the Middlesex Basketball League. Despite early victories and an impressive start, haunted by a number of serious injuries to key players as well as players having to leave the team due to personal circumstances, the season did not continue in the same fashion... Our current position in the league table with only one game remaining, is far from what was expected of a team that has more talented individuals in it than any other team in this league.
The result table however, does not reflect certain new realities. The team is more competitive than it has ever been. This applies to both the individuals in the team as well as the team as a whole.
Additionally, there is a new level of commitment and dedication that was always missing in the past and most of the team is always present at the practice sessions. There is now a definite structure and a better understanding of the basic concepts of basketball as well as much improved teamwork.
Fitness is still a huge problem. Losses are marginal (2-8 points) often attributed to either a single incident that disturbs the team's focus or/and more often than not to the obvious lack of fitness. In a sport where size actually matters, our team needs to work much harder than the tall opposition and this requires an extra level of fitness that our team has simply yet to achieve.
In all, I am proud to be part of our men's basketball team and can't help but feel we have so much more to offer both as individuals and as a team. I only hope we do not end up wasting all this potential out of laziness, 'part-time dedication' and ultimately, lack of belief...
With the MBL play-off's as well as the Summer Homenetmen Games in Greece just around the corner, it is time to focus on our weaknesses and build on our strengths. Perhaps in the not so distant future, the results will finally reflect the talent and the effort of our team and I will no longer need to write about 'our potential' and how we are 'almost good enough' to beat any team...

Junior Football Progresses
Homenetmen Junior football is finally underway. Senior coach Klauss Celadon has been assigned to guide this youthful team to prosper and achieve their full potential. Attendance has been very impressive with over 10 juniors turning up week in week out.
The junior team has recently participated in various friendly games against strong opposition. With 2 wins under their belt and one defeat it seems as though these youngsters have a bright future ahead of them. If you would like to participate in the junior football sessions or want to know more about these practices, please do not hesitate to contact Narbeh Assadoorian on 07711 279 965 or e-mail the sports committee.

Junior Basketball Training Commences
From May, Homenetmen London is starting junior basketball training sessions for 12-16 year olds. For a trial period, the training sessions will take place at our usual venue between 4-5pm on Sundays. Sevan Artin will coach the group and we aim to expand the training sessions into a longer session in due course. Participation is open to all Homenetmen junior members and we would ask the parents to encourage their children to attend. Our future lies in their hands!
Sponsored Walk
In a fund-raising effort, the Homenetmen London sports committee have organised a sponsored walk which is taking place TODAY!, 30th April. Participants will be embarking on a walk from St. Sarkis Church to Acton High School. Sponsorship monies collected will go towards sustaining Homenetmen's sports activities.
If you missed out on sponsoring or taking part but would still like to make a donation towards Homenetmen London Marzagan, please contact the sports committee at sports@homenetmen.org.uk. All contributions would be very much appreciated.

Which Sports Drinks?
There are three types of Sports drink all of which contain various levels of fluid, electrolytes carbohydrate. They are
1. Isotonic 2. Hypotonic 3. Hypertonic.
Which is most suitable?
Isotonic
Quickly replaces fluids lost by sweating supplies a boost of carbohydrate. This drink is the choice for most athletes - middle and long distance running or team sports. Glucose is the body's preferred source of energy therefore it may be appropriate to consume Isotonic drinks where the carbohydrate source is glucose in a concentration of 6% to 8% - e.g. High Five, SiS Go, Boots Isotonic, Lucozade Sport.
Hypotonic
Quickly replaces fluids lost by sweating. Suitable for athletes who need fluid without the boost of carbohydrate e.g. jockeys and gymnasts.
Hypertonic
Used to supplement daily carbohydrate intake normally after exercise to top up muscle glycogen stores. In ultra distance events high levels of energy are required and Hypertonic drinks can be taken during exercise to meet the energy requirements. If used during exercise, Hypertonic drinks need to be used in conjunction with Isotonic drinks to replace fluids.

Valentine's Night
Valentine's night was not a bad turn out, considering it's a day most couples like to spend by themselves. Although the night didn't kick off until quite late (as usual with Armenians), it proved to be fun. Many thanks to Roubina Azizian for her lovely decorations, as well as the joint organisational efforts of Marzagan and Scout khorhoort which made the night possible.
