Dear Readers
As our teams kick start a new sports season with promising challenges ahead, we, the 2003-2004 Sports Committee, prepare to hand over our annual report which spans a year of tough training schedules, competitive leagues, international tournaments and of course the hosting of our very own Pan-European Games event.
But, it doesn't stop here with us. The plans for the new season are already in place and well under way. With the pending appointment of the next committee we are confident that Homenetmen Marzagan and its marzigs will continue to progress and reach new heights.
As a final note from us, we would like to thank all those who have contributed physically, mentally, financially and morally to the success of our sports division.
Best of luck to all our teams in the new season!
Marzagan Khorhoort 2003/04

Men's Basketball Team Re-enter the League
Winds of change...
After a full year and what seemed more like a decade out of the Middlesex Basketball League, the MBL, the all (almost) new and much improved Homenetmen's men's basketball team were entered into the league once again this year to compete and put their new found team spirit and determination to the test.
After only two games, one can't help but notice the change. The team seems to be playing positive basketball as well as appearing much more together. Much has changed about the way they rotate the basketball and play for each other. On the court for most of the game they seem to be organised and focused. You can hear encouragement from the bench and visually notice the ever standing, tall and intimidating figure of their young American coach giving instructions to the players and keeping the referees on their toes.
Overall not a bad start... The team have won two and lost one. The focus is on improvement and staying positive. They have a long season ahead and many more victories are anticipated. The target is a top four position in the league table at the end of the season. The team however, is determined to do better and if the hard work they have been putting in during their two sessions each week is anything to go by, this should not be a problem.

GOALS for the Men's Football Team
With the winter months closing in, July seems a fair distance away. After the dazzling performances by both our football teams during the Pan-European Games, the memory of comradeship still remains, as it is not only a memory, it is a reality. Homenetmen London's soldiers battled it out on the turf at Brunel for their teammates, and together, have created a new bond for Homenetmen Football. Before the next tournament in April, the team has a new challenge. A challenge they have waited a decade for...
... The football team will be participating in the GOALS league this winter. Playing under the new Wembley Arch, and traditional British winter weather conditions, they will confront other 5-a-side teams, in an attempt to win the GOALS Championship. A difficult task. However, calling on experience, skill and commitment will surely deliver the Holy Grail.

Time-Out Please Ref.
Homenetmen Ladies Basketball Team have called a longer than usual time out this year. Unfortunately, due to a number of reasons, the Ladies Team will not be participating in the Middlesex League this year. However, fear not. The team is 100% committed and in training, preparing to make a huge comeback next season... Middlesex League Ladies... watch out!
We would like to take this opportunity to wish the Men's team lots of luck. You have our support all the way! Come on Boys!

Armenia's Rocky Road to Germany 2006
Ok, so the world of international football isn't exactly shaking with fear
at the prospect of playing Armenia as we're firmly rooted at the foot of
World Cup Qualifying group A. We have suffered 4 straight defeats in a row
as we attempt to master the art of winning the beautiful game. However, I have a message to those who have relinquished all hope of ever
seeing Armenia at a major footballing tournament, look at the positives.
The Armenian national team is a consistent one, and consistency is an
integral asset of any successful team. If we are consistent enough to lose
4 in a row, we may one day win 4 in a row. Furthermore, our predicament
cannot worsen as we look up from the foot of the table so therefore it's not
untrue to say things can only get better. Lets also not forget that the
Armenian Football Association will be able to invest in the Armenian
footballing stars of tomorrow as it has saved a lot of money in the last 4
games. It has not had to pay out a win bonus to its players and Armen
Shahgeldyan has been the only player to receive a goal bonus as we have
scored 1 and conceded 11. (I blame the goalkeeper)
We are currently ranked no. 123 in the world, one place above Tahiti which is
a nice place and 24 places above Andorra who are also in Group A.
The first game with that great footballing nation of Macedonia was lost 3-0
which may seem like an unequivocal beating but the game turned on a
shocking piece of refereeing which would not even be tolerated at 2pm on a
Sunday afternoon in Osterley. Albert Sarkisian (no relation of mine before
you hold me culpable) was sent off in that match and thereafter the
Macedonians seized control of the football match.
In the second and third games against Finland in which Sarkisian again
became the subject of the referees attention with yet another caution we
were comprehensively beaten but never made to look stupid.
And finally, we lost to the Czech Republic who are a great team having
recently reached the final of Euro 2004.
The next match is against Romania on November 17th... never say never.

Armenian supremacy for Agassi (The Boston Globe)
"NEW YORK -- They played for the championship of Armenia yesterday at Flushing Meadow, where a collateral event, the US Open, was also in progress.
Maybe Watertown, Mass., would have been a more suitable location. But the two Armenian-blooded contenders - Andre Agassi and Sargis Sargsian - happened to be in town on tennis business, and squared off for the seventh time, this their most significant encounter.
Of the record afternoon assemblage of 35,190, about 20,000 surrounded the adversaries in sunny Ashe Stadium. A young woman name Anahid Youssoufian, a few rows from the court, flapped a red-blue-and-orange striped Armenian flag throughout the 90-minute clash, proclaiming, "We can't lose! Armenia can't lose!" And Armenia didn't..."

How to get (and stay) focused on training using SMART goals:
1. Specific: You need to have concrete targets. Rather than saying "I want to improve my 5K time", say "I will reduce my 5K time by 20 seconds over the next six months".
2. Measurable: When you set yourself a goal, make sure you can measure how well you're doing. Monitor your performance but don't let it
become a chore. Instead, why not build a regular 'measurement day' into your training schedule and assess your performance across various disciplines then?
3. Adjustable: Having set your specific, measurable goal, don't just leave it there, set it in stone. As your circumstances and performance change, you might need to change the goal. If you beat your target on the first attempt well done! But maybe it was too easy. If you sustain an injury that's
going to slow you down, it's OK - adjust your goal accordingly.
4. Realistic: You CAN smash your personal best. But saying "I'm going to take a third off my PB" is more likely to be a demotivator. Recognise that goals that stretch you, but are still within reach, have a stronger motivating force than pie-in-the-sky goals that just sound good.
5. Time-based:
Our first example, of cutting 20s off a 5K time within six months meets this condition. You have a fixed time-period within which to improve. Everyone, from journalists to sports people, work better with a deadline. Ensure you don't move your time-period. If life events or injuries prevent you from achieving in the fixed time-period, it's better to go back to the start of your goal-setting process and set a new timed goal.
