Pan-European Games 2004
Celebrating Homenetmen London's 25th Anniversary
On the morning of Friday 2nd July 2004 the Londoners waited in anticipation for the arrival of the men's football and basketball teams in the exquisite lobby of the four star Marriott Hotel to set off the weekend of the Homenetmen London Pan-European Games. After many pots of tea, the first sight of a team appeared strolling through the lobby's glass doors; the German's had arrived. Within a few minutes everyone was shaking hands and welcoming the team to London. After settling in, everyone went about their own thing, half went sight-seeing but due to typical English weather their time was cut short. Meanwhile back at the hotel Sasun from Lugano arrived just in time for the trip to Windsor. Our newly appointed London tour guides tried their best to make the teams feel welcome as they made their way to riverside bars and restaurants. The teams enjoyed the sights and took many memorable photos next to the castle. While these teams acquainted themselves with one another the two remaining- Homenetmen France and AJAB Belgium made their arrivals at the hotel completing the combination of the five European teams that would participate in the tournament along with Homenetmen London...

Middlesex Basketball League Play-off Tournament
In May of this year, as part of the preparation for the Souren Mouradian games in Paris and Homenetmen London's 25th anniversary games, the men's basketball team participated in the annual "Middlesex Basketball League Play-off Tournament".
Our boys got off to a good start by winning their first game against the Richmond Jaguars, comprehensively beating them 62-53. Not bad, considering this was the team's first competitive game for over a year and also the first under the new coach Pete Deppisch.
That initial win was followed by narrow defeats to TVU (55-61) and Hawks (52-55) on the Saturday. These losses, having been in a position to win them with only a few seconds remaining on the clock, was born out of inexperience and it was clear that we need to improve if we are to fulfil our ambition of winning future tournaments.
Despite these losses, the morale and spirit in the team was high. Alas, this momentum was short lived as the team came up against much tougher, not to mention taller, opposition on Sunday which resulted in heavy defeats against the Westside U19s (43-77) and Chiltern (39-62). God clearly did not intend for Armenians to play basketball!
In the end, it was clear that much has yet to be learnt. The TVU and the Hawks games resulted in defeats that should have been narrow wins. On the more positive side, the team showed that it is capable of competing at this level. A promising sign, as we will come up against these very same teams in the League competition next season which starts in October. Bring it on!

2004 Souren Mouradian Games
With everyone still exchanging stories about the Amsterdam Games, and all of us looking forward to the Pan-European Games in London in July, the Homenetmen London basketball team and their dedicated supporters flew to Paris for the Souren Mouradian Games at the end of May.
On arrival at Charles de Gaulle, we were greeted by two members of Homenetmen France and we were lucky enough not to hear any cracking or see any walls crumbling. Equally un-exhilarating was the not-so-fantastic Etap Hotel, which was to be our 'home away from home' for the next 4 days. Coach Pete must have thought he was Gulliver and had arrived in some far off fantasy land thanks to the immense lack of space the hotel provides. Envisage a 7ft tall man driving a Smart car and you have Pete in his room.
Friday night, the team split and we all went in search of a relaxing night out in Paris. A few bottles of wine later the team returned for some rest before the start of the Games the following day.
Why is it when the football team isn't playing in a tournament, matches seem to start in the afternoon? On Saturday the Homenetmen London basketball team played their first match against Homenetmen Paris at midday. With some great plays and shouts of "forty-one, forty-one" the team fought hard to fight back a deficit of 14 points at one stage. With team performance improving, time was unfortunately not on our side, and we lost by a small margin.
With only 3 basketball teams participating in this tournament: Homenetmen Paris, Homenetmen London and ZAD Frankfurt, each team was to play each other on Saturday, and then again on Sunday, with a league system deciding the winner. Homenetmen Paris played ZAD Frankfurt next and won again, placing them top of the table. After a short break it was our turn to play ZAD Frankfurt. Once again we were just short of victory.
On Saturday night, the whole team and supporters, plus our French and German friends attended an Armenian/Greek restaurant for dinner. Thanks to a live Greek band, we were entertained by the dazzling solo performance of Alex Katsouris on the dance-floor showing that he really is half Cypriot. After dinner the whole team attended a party organised by Diaspora-Armenia Connection France.
It was not the party that was the highlight of the night, nor Alex's dancing, it was actually our mode of transport to Avenue d'Opera and the club. If there is anything Sevan Artin can claim legendary status for in his lifetime it has to be flagging down a coach on a busy Parisian street, and bribing the driver to take 20 Armenians to a club in the city. For those of you unlucky enough not to have been there, it was a remarkable sight.
On Sunday we played two more games, and lost them both. Loris a.k.a. 'The Great Lorenzo', was adamant it was Heineken London playing and not Homenetmen London. Looks like our antics the night before were taking their toll, although I should highlight some great displays by the players. Our 3 pointers were more accurate and our runs were more robust. It was just our stamina which was lacking. In my opinion Shahan stood out for his runs and ball handling skills, and Shiz for his on court presence, and elbowing. Andre also stood out... for... err... his broken hand. The closing ceremony was swift and typically Gallic, and we picked up our trophy. Third place isn't bad! Homenetmen Paris won the football too, beating Homenetmen Almelo Holland 11-0 in the final.
So we move on to the now infamous French dinner/dance which was actually extremely enjoyable. With the Armenian music getting people on to the dance-floor the London Ladies showed the French how a 'shoorch bar' is done on our side of the channel. The Great Lorenzo showed off his dance moves, and weight lifting ability by picking everyone up. I believe we were there for five hours. In that whole time, the men's basketball coach - Pete, and the ladies' basketball coach - Sevan, did not move from their seats once. This was evident at the end of the night when they unveiled their 'beer can tower' consisting of approximately 60 cans of beer. I love coaches that lead by example! Just wait until the football team challenge you in July.
Overall the trip was extremely successful and enjoyed by all. Bonding is always a highlight of these events and I would like to thank everyone who attended for making it such a good trip, and to congratulate Andre on leading us back to London 'sans problems'.

In Memory of the Injured Ones
by Ruth Tchaparian
As another season ends, the holiday begins,
But in our thoughts are those with injured limbs,
Wounded in football or a basketball game,
One of their limbs had sadly become lame.
On the bench they sat as they couldn't play,
Would their injury ever go away?
Missing league matches and international games,
They thought their limbs would never be the same.
Well do not fret and do not worry,
With a bit of physio they'll be better in a hurry,
Now summer is here with sunshine and cheer,
They can rest and be better to play next year.
So to all those injured players out there,
The pain and strain we know you can't bare,
So rest up well and get in top condition,
And we'll see you playing your very best next season.

Diet Facts:
1. Feeling Thirsty Is A Sign Of Dehydration Water is the ultimate ergogenic aid, but because the body has a poor thirst mechanism, you must drink before you feel thirsty. Once you are thirsty you are already slightly dehydrated, and your performance will be diminished.
2. Eat To Be Healthy, And Not To Be Thin In reality, there is no pill, potion, or powder that can enhance your performance like the right foods and fluids.
3. Carbohydrates A high-carbohydrate diet increases stores of glycogen, the energy for muscles, and improves overall athletic performance. The bulk of the day's calories (60% - 70%) should come from carbohydrates such as bread, cereal, grains, pasta, vegetables, and fruit.
Different carbohydrate foods can affect your energy level in different ways. Digestion rates are expressed as a "glycemic index." Foods with a high glycemic index release energy into the bloodstream more rapidly.
4. Fat Is an important energy source, particularly for athletes involved in prolonged, low-intensity activity, (For high-intensity, short-term activity such as sprinting and jumping, carbohydrate is the primary fuel source. For longer events carbohydrates and fats are the energy sources.). About 20% of the calories in a performance-enhancing diet should come from fat, most of it unsaturated fat like vegetable and fish oils.
5. Protein Protein plays a minor role in energy production, contributing only 5% to 10% of the energy used during prolonged exercise. The primary functions of protein are growth, maintenance and repair of body tissue rather than as an energy source. Using protein for energy is inefficient, expensive, and may lead to liver and kidney problems in later life.
6. Vitamins and Minerals They don't contribute energy themselves, but vitamins and minerals are integral to food metabolism and energy production. Iron and calcium are the minerals most commonly deficient in athletes.
There are 13 known vitamins:
Four fat-soluble vitamins -- A, D, E, and K -- which your body stores in amounts large enough to last for months; and
Nine water-soluble vitamins: C, and the B-complex vitamins -- B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, folic acid, biotin, and pantothenic acid. Your body is able to store enough of these vitamins to last for several weeks.
To date, no evidence suggests that extra vitamins will enhance athletic performance, increase strength, endurance or energy. Vitamin E is a possible exception because it is an antioxidant, which means it helps fight damage to body cells. It may help reduce the tissue damage associated with intense exercise.
Diet Rules:
1. Pre-Game:
Eat lightly before an athletic competition. Eat complex carbohydrates; keep protein and fat intakes low since these slow digestion.
Avoid bulky foods. They may stimulate bowel movements. Bulky foods include raw fruits and vegetables, dry beans and peas and popcorn.
Avoid gas-forming foods such as vegetables from the cabbage family and cooked dry beans.
Drink water to be adequately hydrated.
Avoid drastic changes in your normal diet routine immediately prior to competition. Some athletes prefer to use favourite foods which may give them a psychological edge.
2. Post-Game:
Consume carbohydrate-rich foods and beverages as soon as possible after competition. They will replenish glycogen stores quickly and get you back into performance shape. Fruits, juices, high carbohydrate drinks and pop are examples.
Replace fluids that have been lost. For every pound that is lost, drink 2 cups of fluids.
Replace any potassium or sodium that has been lost during competition or training by using foods. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of potassium. Replace sodium by eating salty foods. If activity has exceeded 2 hours and is vigorous, a sports beverage will be helpful.
