Marzagan goes to Amsterdam...
Ararat Amsterdam Games 2004
Heathrow was the place to be on the morning of Friday 2nd April 2004 as Homenetmen London, players and supporters alike, gathered at the group check-in desk ready to hit Amsterdam with a bang. All was well, even with the delay of an hour, as the various groups toddled off to sample the shopping delights of Terminal 4 - and it was with a sense of relief to the old Euros burning in our pockets that we started to board the plane. No sooner had we figured out where to sit, had sampled the apple crumble that tasted like cardboard and had completed every crossword imaginable, we arrived in the Dam...

Junior Football Victories
In recent months the junior football team has participated in numerous friendly matches against other clubs. The age groups were split into 2 categories: 11-14 and 15-16; this was due to the vast number of players that arrived on match day. There were a total of 6 games played, each lasting 10 minutes. All 6 games were won by the Homenetmen London junior teams with very convincing score lines. Individual players excelled but it was the collective display that impressed viewers most.
The junior team has great potential with a few players on the verge of being promoted to the senior team. I would like to congratulate the team on its victories and hope it continues training hard for the future.

Ladies Basketball Team: End of Season Report
So, we find ourselves at the end of another Basketball season, they say all good things come to an end, but how good was it for the Homenetmen Ladies Basketball Team in the Middlesex League, after 3 years of not competing?
We began back in October 2003, some nervous, some excited at our prospects and the competition we were going to face. We met many of our old opponents, with some new faces too, so it was interesting to compare our performance now, with our performance against them in the previous years.
Our first match gave us a good start, as it was a successful one, against opponents whom we had previously lost against. This gave us the motivation and team spirit we needed for a smooth entrance into the League.
In the following matches we met some real competition and faced some dignified losses, with the team showing great effort and determination and the point difference often close.
Interestingly it became clear that Armenians were not physiologically made for Basketball! Many of the players in the League also played in the National League, so, as you can imagine, we faced some very aggressive players over 6ft tall, physically much bigger than us "noorp" Armenian girls! Needless to say we used our speed to combat this disadvantage.
Playing in the League was a definite challenge, physically and mentally with battle scars to show for it, as many of our team members suffered various injuries throughout the League. Yes, it was as brutal as it sounds!
It has certainly been a learning experience, as not only were we able to put our basketball knowledge into practice, we also got to know the level of competition out there, with which we can set our targets for the future. Furthermore, we have come to realise not only our individual abilities but also the team's strengths and weaknesses, giving us an idea on what to improve on.
With a few successful matches achieved, the most positive achievement in my eyes is the position that we reached in the League table, as it was not last position! We have also grown as a team throughout this competition and our team spirit is never failing.
Our achievement this year has given us a positive outlook as it is evidence of our progression in our level of play during these three years, not to mention our success in the Ararat Amsterdam Games this Easter.
I would like to thank and congratulate the girls and coach Sevan for their tenacity and participation in the League and the team spirit each member has displayed. To conclude I believe the team deserves a very huge pat on the back for defending our title in Amsterdam as European Champions, two years in a row - Well done Team, Bravo!

Men's Basketball Update
While you thought we were sleeping...
Our Homenetmen men's basketball team is an institution in itself. Despite a large number of ups and downs which have seen the team seesaw from the bottom to the top of the Middlesex Basketball League (MBL) and back down again, our team has faced tough challenges and diversity in many forms and is still determined to come out on top.
Last year the decision was made not to enter our men's team into the MBL for the first time in over a decade. Instead, the team has been going through a challenging period of re-evaluating, restructuring and reforming itself under the watchful eye of our new professional coach, Pete Deppisch.
Our new coach believes that a winning mentality needs to be established first. Our team needs to believe in its collective ability to compete effectively and to produce the high level of basketball we all know we are capable of for prolonged periods. Currently this happens in three to five minute time blocks. These blocks need to be extended to last an entire quarter, then an entire half, through a 40 minute game, a 3-5 game winning streak and finally to an entire season.
Progress has been made... that much is very obvious. Attendance numbers are up, players consistently attend sessions and there is a new feeling of positivity in the air during the practice sessions. The storming phase of the team is slowly giving way to norming and we hope that soon the much anticipated performing phase will follow.
The next few months will do much to test the new attitude of our team and its progress so far throughout the last few months. In early May there will be the two day MBL playoffs which will provide the perfect forum and standard for our team to measure itself against. At the end of May, the Souren Mouradian Games in Paris will give the team an opportunity to further bond and to test ourselves against old Homenetmen rivals and to perhaps put an end to the image of the 'punching bag team' we have portrayed over the last few years at these types of tournaments. The chance to shine in front of our home crowd however, will come in early July at the 1st London Pan-European games organised by Homenetmen London to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this shining chapter...
Will this be a case of too much being expected too soon? Can our team rise to the challenge and answer some tough questions about its character and resilience? We only have to wait until July to find out!

Fact File: Gary Kasparov
Gary Kimovich Kasparian has been the top rated chess player in the world since around 1982 and is regarded by many as one of the strongest players ever. He was world champion from 1985 to 1993.
Gary was born April 13, 1963, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Gary's last name was originally Wainshtain, but his father, Kim died when he was six, and at age of 12, he changed to a version of his mother's maiden name Klara Kasparian who was a music teacher. Already by the age of ten, his play had begun to attract attention whilst studying mainly by correspondence for five years. By the age of 15, he had made it to the Top League of the Soviet championship, in preparation for the world championship. He finished in the middle beating some of the world's top ten players. He entered the top-ten himself after a victory in 1979 ahead of former world champion Tigran Petrosian. He went on to take the World Junior Championship and became a Grandmaster in 1980 at the age of 17.
In 1981 he earned the USSR championship. In 1982 and after many victories he became a candidate for the world championship and in 1983 after eliminating the other candidates, he won the right to challenge the world championship against Anatoly Karpov. The first match against Karpov, staged in Moscow in 1984, was stopped after 48 games and over 4 months of play with the score standing at 5-3 in favour of Karpov. Kasparov won a rematch six months later, at the age of 22 becoming the youngest world champion ever. He defended his title against Karpov in 1986, 1987 and 1990. In 1993 he formed the rival Professional Chess Association, becoming its champion. In 1996 he became the first world champion to lose to a computer; IBM's "Deep Blue" in a game played with time controls, but subsequently won the rematch in 1997.

Workout Essentials:
Warm-ups help the body to prepare for the effects of exercise and reduce the chance of injury. The warm-up should be a combination of rhythmic exercises that begin to raise the heart rate and raise muscle temperature, and static stretching.
1. Balance Your workouts should be balanced between cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility exercises.
2. Variety You should participate in a variety of activities each week. Concentrating on one activity or sport can lead to activity-related repetitive injuries.
3. Stretching Before your workout, spend some time jogging in place or doing jumping jacks to warm up your muscles so that you can stretch them easily. Never bounce while stretching and never try to stretch without warming your muscles up.
4. Equipment Buy and use the proper safety equipment for your activity. Make sure everything fits comfortably and properly. Your shoes should match your activity and should be worn only for that activity.
5. Fuel Proper diet and fluid intake is crucial. Don't work out on an empty stomach. Try to eat a small meal beforehand. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after activity, especially in hot weather.

The year is 2020:
I would like to announce a new joiner to the Homenetmen Men's Football Team. His name is Aldous jnr and he was born on April 26th 2004.
Like father, like son - he plays in central defence, takes no prisoners and is known to enjoy a beer.
Ronnie Sarkisian, Homenetmen's 45 year old goalkeeper welcomes Aldous hoping he will plug the gaps in the leaky defence.
Back to 2004:
From the whole of Homenetmen Marzagan, congratulations to Simon and Silva on the birth of their baby son.

Annual Scouts Day
This year Homenetmen London marks its 25th Anniversary. With many of the
events lined up for this special year the Homenetmen Scouts Division held
its Annual Scouts Day event on 27th March 2004 at Acton Town Hall.
Scouts from the ages of 5-16 presented a wonderful evening full of song,
dance and other great performances. This year, the young and
talented band 'Aravod' were invited from Philadelphia to perform with some unique
traditional Armenian instruments. It was a memorable night for all involved!
