Welcome

Welcome
Welcome to the third issue of "e-Marz", Homenetmen London's sports e-Newsletter.

This last issue for 2003 once again brings you an update of the many sports activities and events brought to you by Homenetmen London.

Building on foundations laid over the years, we believe that this year has seen a significant progression of the Sports Division with more than 60 marzigs regularly participating in their chosen sport. We have no doubt that this progress will continue into 2004 and beyond.

We would like to thank everyone who has given us valuable feedback as this has helped shape the Homenetmen Sports Division of today and we would encourage you to continue your contributions.

As a final note, many thanks to those who have provided articles and pictures to the first 3 issues of e-Marz... an e-Newsletter which we have found to be a productive tool in improving communication and increasing overall public interest and awareness of Homenetmen Marzagan. Thanks also to those of you who have taken an interest in reading e-Marz!

Best of luck to all teams in the new season!

New Men's Basketball Coach Appointed
As the Homenetmen Men's Basketball team take a breather from the Middlesex Basketball League, newly appointed coach Pete Deppisch aims to bring together the individual skills and talent in the team to make a stronger, structured and organised team with the confidence to reach the top of the league tables. Pete comes with many years of experience both in play and in coaching. He currently plays for National team London United. We hope he will drive the team to many wins!
If you're aged 18+ and are thinking about joining the men's basketball team, now is the time to contact us.

New Football Coach Appointed
Both the senior and junior football teams have demonstrated a huge improvement in skills, team structure and discipline over the past year. This is a trend we hope will continue under the instruction of newly appointed coach Klauss Celadon who brings with him many years of coaching experience both in the UK and abroad. The senior football team has shown great enthusiasm and commitment during training and play and aims to enter the "Goals" League next year. The next few months of training will hopefully prepare the talented team of more than 15 players to achieve their aim and produce the goals.

Ladies basketball team back in league after three year break.
A new coach, a bigger team, a European Cup and a marriage later, the Homenetmen Ladies Basketball Team are still going and now face the league after three years without competing.
Throughout these three years the team has continued to train twice a week and has worked hard to improve. Their success in the European Games in Geneva April 2003, proved that they could do better as a team, increasing their motivation and team spirit.
With a new coach and thirteen members, they now face the Ladies First Division of the Middlesex Basketball League with hopes of achieving much more this time around, individually and as a team.
The team has improved since the last time they entered the League, and boasts a strong defence, and an offence, which can of course improve with the practice they will gain from the matches they will play.
The team has already enjoyed success in the victory of their first League game against British Airways on October 14th. Although they were overjoyed at the outcome, the players are mindful that there is much tougher competition ahead of them, and therefore refrain from complacency, but will of course continue to try their hardest and do their best.
With Sevan Artin's coaching and increasing team confidence, the team feel positive about the challenge ahead and look forward to the practice and experience they will all gain.
This year the ladies have nine home games, and it is always motivating to have support from the sidelines, so please feel free to come down and cheer them on! Click here for the fixtures list.
I would like to wish all of the team the best of luck in the League and hope to see some positive developments in the outcome. Source:- Ruth Tchaparian (Ladies Team Captain)

Junior Teams Boosted after Recruitment Launch
The recruitment drive launched in July with the aim of attracting more people to the junior basketball and football teams has had a very encouraging response so far. If you know of any juniors who are interested but have not yet signed up, please e-mail the Sports Committee or click on the link below for more information.

Armenia v N. Ireland
2003 will always be remembered as the year Armenian Football arrived on the scene. Homenetmen London men's team made history by winning their first ever competitive fixture in Geneva despite my best efforts as stand-in coach !!
However, our footballing brothers in the Armenian National team went one better by beating Northern Ireland 1-0 in Belfast. Arman Karamyan slammed in the decisive goal on 27 minutes and will be a hero for years to come as he is now the renaissance man of Armenian football.
Bring on Brazil, but not Spain...
Unfortunately, Armenia suffered a 4-0 reverse at the hands of the Spaniards on Saturday 11th October. Before the game, Spanish Coach Inaki Saez warned his men against complacency, "I remember the last game against Armenia when it took a penalty to beat them. They made things very tough and worked very hard for the whole game."
The matadors were in inspirational form as they cruised past us in Yerevan, however Karamyan was not playing. Luckily, England did us proud by stuffing Turkey and the Homenetmen Men's Football team retrospectively avenged Armenia's defeat by beating a Spanish Team in a "friendly" back in May. There is therefore hope, as for the first time in our history, Armenia did not finish bottom of their qualifying group.

Youri Djorkaeff Youri Djorkaeff Fact File...

D.O.B. 09.03.68
Height: 1.79m
Club: Bolton Wanderers
Position: Midfielder

With an interest in football from a very early age, this Frenchman of Armenian origin starts his training at a centre in Grenoble, France.
After several years of training here, Youri Djorkaeff is persuaded that he could play at a higher level and so leaves for Strasbourg in 1989 before joining Emmanuel Petit in Monaco the following season in the Coupe de France (1991). Djorkaeff remains in Monaco until 1995, before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain where he is to replace the departed first-rate players David Ginola and Georges Weah. This he achieves admirably and suitably content he says: "The change was a great step forward in my career and the best thing that could have happened to me".

Following several successes, Djorkaeff receives proposals from several large European clubs. He chooses Italy and plays at Inter Milan where the high level of play practiced in the Italian championship enables him to improve. During his first year, he wins a European title, the UEFA Cup (1997). The following year, he continues with Inter alongside the likes of Ronaldo, Zamorano, Simeone and Baggio. Unfortunately, there are too many big name stars at Inter and Djorkaeff finds himself on the bench more often than on the pitch. His departure in 1999 takes him to the German Bundesliga.

More importantly however in 1998, Djorkaeff stars in the greatest footballing event, The World Cup, playing a decisive role in the French victory.

In recent years, in the twilight of an illustrious career, Djorkaeff could not resist the lure of playing in the most exciting league in the world, the English Premiership. He saved Bolton Wanderers from relegation and is a name to be proud of in Armenian circles.

Top Tips

Be a Better Player...

Top 5 Basketball Tips:

1. Stay in stance
Play with your knees bent. Always stay in stance. It is your point of maximum explosion. Be ready to move. The lowest person wins.
2. Contest every shot
Get a hand up on every shooter. The only person who can score is the one with the ball. Contest the shot even if it means leaving your feet (but don't fall for a head fake too easily!).
3. Two hands
Gain possession with two hands. Catch the ball with 2 hands. Concentrate on the catch before you do anything else. Rebound with 2 hands and try for every one.
4. Run hard
Try to out run your opponent every time. You will usually break their will with your first three steps. It will help you get easy shots on offence with your fast break. Getting back on defence will help stop their fast break.
5. Pass to the first open team-mate
Pass to the first open person. Passing the ball is faster than dribbling it. If you move the ball, you make the defence adjust and they might make a mistake and leave someone (maybe you!) open. Don't wait for a better pass.

Top 5 Football Tips:

1. Work on your chest control
A lot of players choose to head a ball when it is at chest height, but if you can bring the ball down on the chest then it allows you to keep possession.
2. Win defensive headers
Defensive heading is all about gaining height and distance on your clearance. This will help you to cut out crosses, corners and the long ball.
3. Keepers - get low
The toughest shots for any goalkeeper to deal with are those low, either in the corners or sometimes close to the feet. Either way it is important for a goalkeeper to be able to get down quickly and not only save low shots, but also hold on to the ball.
4. Dribble like Duff
Defenders hate players that can run at them with the ball at speed. Practice dribbling in and out of cones to work wonders for your touch and balance on the ball.
5. Score the goal
Scoring goals are what football is all about, but even the best like Michael Owen spend hours practicing their shooting. Get out and practice hitting the target.

Event Reviews

Hey Mambo
On Saturday 13th September, a Latin extravaganza took place in Windsor hall in Ealing. The smell of freshly made Burittos and other South American specialities filled the hall with a spicy aroma. A fantastic live band, Latin dancers and our expert barmen making the classic Mojito cocktails, made it a truly unforgettable evening.

Nune Concert
"A night to remember", this is what was promised and this is what was delivered! On Sunday 19th October, in the presence of over 800 fellow Armenians, Kensington Town Hall witnessed one of the most glamorous performances of the year.
Amongst the glimmer and light of the hall Nune Yesayan gave a shining and unforgettable performance. With her distinctive voice, and with songs ranging from Komitas to some of her modern classics, for more than two hours the audience experienced that what makes the Armenian music such an uplifting experience.
What made the night even more special was the mood and the participation of the audience throughout the performance. This event was organised by joint cooperation between Armenian Relief Society, Homenetmen London and Hamazkayin Cultural Organisation of Great Britain.

Have Your Say

Do I Owe Homenetmen?
" When I was first approached to write an article on this question, I was getting ready for our summer banagoom - all of the people involved were inundated and having countless meetings to make sure the camp would be a success. So I felt as most people do in stressful situations - "why am I doing this?" Yes, it does occur to us sometimes, and to all people involved in voluntary organisations; no one is 100% committed to a cause and never questions their own position or indeed their own motivation. And so the eternal question; why am I working in Homenetmen?... "
