Welcome

e-Marz celebrates its 5th year in circulation!

Dear Homenetmen Athlete

As the incoming Sports Committee for 2007-2008, we would like to welcome you to another edition of our popular e-Marz newsletter which celebrates its 5th year in circulation!

We have much to be joyful about and report in this e-Marz and hope you share in our joy and excitement by making a decision to actively participate in our sporting and Homenetmen activities in some way in order to make a difference to your community and to perhaps enhance your own sense of belonging and well-being.

It gives us great pleasure to announce the restart of our ladies' basketball team after almost 8 months of inactivity, the fact that our men's football team will be playing in Middlesex Division 6 cup finals on the 8th of May 2008 and that in May we will be participating at the Souren Mouradian Tournament with more than 30 athletes making up 3 sports teams. In addition to all this we are happy to report our active participation at the Homenetmen London 29th Anniversary celebrations on the 15th of March at Acton Town Hall through our support and awards ceremony, where we honoured our valued volunteer coaches and also our Most Valued sports members.

As ever we are keen to expand our activities and are hungry for new members and volunteers to help us realise our big ambitions and dreams. Over the next few months, we hope to enter our junior football team into a local under 12's league and also to start yoga sessions at the Navasartian Centre. We look forward to seeing you on the courts and at our community events and until then as ever we hope you keep active and keep supporting your teams throughout the year.

Special Report

Football team makes it to Cup Final

In their first season playing Sunday League Football for 10 years, the Homenetmen London football team has made it through to the Cup Final. Having played over 20 league and cup games this season, through a gruelling winter with 10:30am Sunday morning kick offs, this is some achievement. They have finished 4th in the league in a season they expected to merely use as a tester to see if they were equipped enough to compete in an 11-a-side league after years without competitive action.

The Cup Final takes place on Thursday 8th May, 7:30pm at The Warren, home of Yeading FC. Admission for the match is by ticket only priced at £3 each, and they can be purchased by emailing sports@homenetmen.org.uk with your details.

The football team will then be flying off to Paris the day after to compete in the Souren Mouradian Games, where they aim to go all the way this year and win the competition after finishing second in 2007.

Come and support the team at the Cup Final, and after a well earned summer relaxing, they will be back for the new league season in September, come and support the boys!

Scout's Day Celebrations 2008

On Saturday 15th March 2008, nearly 300 beaming parents, family members and guests joined Homenetmen London at Acton Town Hall for the 29th annual Scout's Day anniversary celebrations. His Holiness Bishop Nathan Hovhannisian, the Ambassador Dr Vahe Gabrielyan and Chairman of the Armenian Community and Church Council Mr Ara Palamoudian joined the lively audience to enjoy the opening marching parade.

Members of Homenetmen London who range in age from 5 to 18 years old took part in the official flag opening ceremony which included singing the national anthem and swearing-in the new members by giving them their own "tashginag" (woggle).
After a round of speeches and an interlude where delicious snacks were on offer, the real highlights of the evening began to take to the stage. Each group of talented youngsters performed songs, dances and poems which showcased their unique talents for the audience. The band, which has been created in recent years with musical talent of Homenetmen London members, accompanied many of the songs and the youngest of members displayed a knack for multitasking - singing and dancing with great skill on stage and no sign of nerves!

Given that this year also marks Homenetmen's 90th anniversary, there was a great emphasis on the history of this unique organisation and how much has been achieved to date. A phenomenal finale song full of life and colour, sung and performed by all the members, concluded the evening and one can only imagine what will be in store for next year's 30th anniversary celebrations!

Ladies' Basketball Team back on court

Homenetmen ladies' team are back in training. They've dusted off the cobwebs from their trainers and have jogged back into the game. It's over a year since they last trained together but the team are back together with some old faces also participating.
Although out of shape and out of practice, the passion for the game is still there and a few of the players even took part in the Vienna games this Easter weekend.

We wish the girls all the best for 2008.

Training sessions take place at Heston Community School from 8 till 10pm on Thursdays and players of all abilities are welcome - the more the merrier!
For more information please contact the coach, Vahe Altounian at vicalt74@yahoo.com.au.

Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team is under new management. Our very own Charle Malas who coached the team more than a decade ago has agreed to coach the team in preparation for the Homenetmen Paris Souren Mouradian games and hopefully take it beyond that. The tournament is taking place in early May and the team is undergoing a strict but fair training regime, currently focusing on scrimmage, cardio and building strength. The sessions contain a broad range of exercises to cater for all players, including setting screens, 1-on-1 situations, shooting and fast breaking drills. We also sometimes go back to basics and try to correct minute glitches that any player could do which could affect the whole team and the movement-flow of the ball.

"Play Hard - Play Smart" has become the background echo to the ears of the players and instilling pride and self-belief has become a pivotal aim to our success. After almost two months under his guidance, and the willingness of the senior players, it is quite evident and notable that most players are fitter, speedier, more collective and most importantly, more confident.

The team trains once a week and players have been asked by the coach to do more fitness training off the court to increase levels. We are all hopeful that the team will take part in the Middlesex League next season and for that reason staying fit and motivated is essential to our continuity. In the past month or so the team has welcomed a couple of new players who show good potential. Support and occasional participation of some members from the ladies' team is also much appreciated and injects energy on days of low attendance.

If you are young and skilful and would like to be part of our team, then come along and join us.

My Play Area

Every athlete and member of Homenetmen wishes to have their own playground and centre that shelters our activities. For that day to come we all need to be hopeful and patient. As an e-Marz reader, I did a miniature analytical study into how our members would envisage the process of owning the simplest of play areas. My findings are caricatured below:

Letter to the Sports Committee

Dear all,

I would like to thank you all for nominating me and awarding me with the valuable and symbolic medal for Basketball Player of The Year for 2007. Coming back from injuries and operations was not so easy and still is not, but it always pays off to be dedicated to a cause regardless of the pains.

I would also like to thank all the players in the squad, especially Andre Dadayan and Vahe Altounian who are eligible candidates for this honour, for participating and playing whenever possible throughout the year, without them there would not have been an award ceremony.

Please extend my gratitude and best wishes to the Executive Committee.

Kind Regards,
Lorees Arakelian (March 2008)
