Dear Homenetmen athletes,
Welcome to our second edition of e-Marz for 2007. In this edition we are proud to announce that our newly formed 11-a-side football team have only recently returned from the Souren Mouradian Games in Paris with a second place trophy. The Sports Committee is particularly proud of this achievement as it has taken the commitment of a number of Homenetmen volunteers, their new coach and the dedication of the 14 or so football players to make this dream a reality for us after over a decade without an 11-a-side football team. We wish them every success and having seen them in action, success is almost guaranteed!
Our celebration however is short-lived as we will shortly be saying good-bye to our Homenetmen ladies basketball team who have been European champions at all Inter-Armenian tournaments over the last 5 years. Unfortunately, due to other commitments and a number of personal reasons most of the players are unable to continue and consequently until we can recruit further players we will need to suspend the practices for this team.
We sincerely hope that by the time our next edition is published, we will have a newly revitalised ladies’ basketball team in place to continue our strong tradition of Homenetmen Ladies’ basketball. We would like to use this opportunity to recognise the achievement of the ladies’ team and their tireless coach. Thank you for doing us proud and flying the Homenetmen London flag for all these years.
We are always looking for new football and basketball players for our junior and men’s teams as well as basketball players. Please get in touch with us if you are interested in joining any of our teams and the Homenetmen family.

Senior Football
Over the last few months, the senior football team has evolved from a 5-a-side team to an 11-a-side squad boasting 19 players. The new era of Homenetmen Football, coached by the experienced and determined Sarkis Seridarian, has seen the players show an even greater desire to succeed having switched from astro-turf to the good old green grass the game should be played on. The team will be participating in the Hayes & Middlesex League as of September 2007 and will be using the forthcoming Homenetmen Paris tournament as a stepping stone towards the league.

Junior Football
After a very successful 2006 under Coach Klaus Celadon, the beginning of 2007 saw three new coaches introduced. Under these new coaches, the team has continued its progress from the previous year and is showing more enthusiasm than ever! Unfortunately due to other commitments these coaches could not continue. Therefore, from this month, a new era will begin with the introduction of Joseph Mirzai as the new coach. Klaus Celadon will continue working with Homenetmen to organise tournaments for the juniors. Training continues to take place at the Heston Community Sports Hall.

10 Tips to healthy eating and physical activity for you

1. Start your day with breakfast
Breakfast fills your "empty tank" to get you going after a long night without food.
2. Get Moving
It's easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or lift. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.
3. Snack smart
Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups - a glass of low-fat milk, an apple, celery sticks or some dry cereal. Eat smart at other meal times.
4. Work up a sweat
Vigorous work-outs - when you're breathing hard and sweating - help your heart pump better, give you more energy and help you look and feel your best. Start with a warm-up that stretches your muscles. Include 20 minutes of aerobic activity, such as running or jogging. Then cool-down with more stretching and deep breathing.
5. Balance your food choices - don't eat too much of any one thing
You don't have to give up foods like hamburgers and ice cream to eat healthy. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and A, iron and calcium from a variety of foods. Balance your food choices.
6. Get fit with friends or family
Being active is much more fun with friends or family. Encourage others to join you and plan one special physical activity event, like a bike ride or hiking, with a group each week.
7. Eat more grains, fruits and vegetables
These foods give you carbohydrates for energy, plus vitamins, minerals and fibre. Besides, they taste good! Try whole-wheat breads and oatmeal which are in the grain group. Bananas, strawberries and melons are some great tasting fruits. Try vegetables raw, on a sandwich or salad.
8. Join in physical activities
A sure way to feel good, look good and stay physically fit.
9. Foods aren't good or bad
A healthy eating style is like a puzzle - Some foods may have more fat, sugar or salt while others may have more vitamins or fibre. There is a place for all these foods. What makes a diet good or bad is how foods fit together. Balancing your choices is important. And don't forget about moderation. If two pieces of pizza fill you up, you don't need a third.
10. Make healthy eating and physical activities fun!
Take advantage of physical activities you and your friends enjoy doing together and eat the foods you like. Be adventurous - try new sports, games and other activities as well as new foods. You'll grow stronger, play longer, and look and feel better! Set realistic goals - don't try changing too much at once.
