Senior Football Season Review

In October 2006 the senior football team returned to the Goals Premier League playing under the shadow of the new Wembley Stadium. Playing through the winter season in all sorts of weather is never easy, but the team, coached by Klauss Celadon, produced some remarkable displays. As the season unfolded it was clear that the guys kept their best performances for the second half of each match, with some outstanding goals and comebacks recorded. The Seridarian brothers added power and strength to the back and Mher Malerian some goal scoring prowess. The team welcomed back Narbeh Assadoorian playing competitive football for the first time since his serious knee surgery. The season ended on 30th January 2007 with the Homenetmen FC finishing mid-table. (see table below)

Another season is coming up soon. Having improved their fitness and team play, great things are surely in store for the summer season. First up - European Cup action in Geneva. Let's bring the trophy home boys!

Junior Football

2006 was a very good year for the Homenetmen Junior Football Team, The team continues to develop and become stronger. Coached by Claus Celadon the squad continued to train from 3 to 5pm at Heston community sports hall every Sunday.

The Team played in various 5-aside tournaments at goals and performed extremely well, the highlight being a 3rd place finish. The Players have gained invaluable experience of competitive play and this has provided further motivation for their training sessions on Sundays.

Training has resumed in January under the close supervision of our new coaching staff, Carlo Dilanchian, Simon Aldous and Serge Chirkinian who have officially taken over from mid-January. It is an exciting time for Junior Football; the squad goes into 2007 in a very healthy state.

Men's Basketball

The last quarter of 2006 was a testing time for our men's basketball team. Following the loss of our coach due to work and other commitments until Feb 2007 and a very serious practice injury to one of our key post players which has put him out for over 6 months, the team hopes 2007 will bring about a change in its fortunes. Despite all this, the team currently practices once a week for 2 hours at our new sports venue in Heston every Tuesday night.

We are always looking for new players regardless of their skill level so if you are over 16 and willing and able to commit we would welcome you with open arms. We will be training to repeat the success of last year during our Paris tournament when we travel there once again in the summer of 2007 and also hope to participate in the 2007 Middlesex Basketball League play-offs.

Top Tips

Four Simple Tests To Assess Your Fitness For All Sports

To perform well in any sport your fitness is very important and should be improved steadily throughout the year or season and can be monitored by fitness testing.

To help you monitor your fitness throughout the year, four tests have been formulated which are easy to perform and can be carried out for a variety of different sports. It is however important that the tests are performed on relatively similar days.
For example running on a cool dry day may provide much different results to performing a test on a hot and humid day. Another example is your mood on a day. You will not produce as good a performance when you are feeling tired as you would on a day when you are feeling great.

At least one day of rest or very easy training should precede each fitness test, and you should always feel fresh and ready to perform at a high level on a fitness testing day.

The four simple tests to assess your fitness are shown below. Make sure you warm up thoroughly before undertaking all the tests:

1. The Six Minute Run

This is an endurance test, which involves running as far as possible in six minutes. This should be performed on a running track with the total distance covered in the six minutes the result of this test. The distance run should gradually improve with training.

2. The Hopping Test

Most athletes don't realise that one of their legs is stronger than the other one and is therefore more injury resistant. This can be easily corrected and therefore improve performance as the weaker leg becomes stronger the athlete will become faster and less injury prone.

To identify the weaker leg the hopping test is used. This involves using a hill with an inclination of about 4-6% and a length from bottom to top of at least 40 metres. Starting from the bottom, begin hopping up the hill very quickly on one foot only.

Take 100 hops or as many as you can manage and record this distance covered. Repeat this on the other leg when you are fully recovered.

Over 90% of athletes find a significant difference in the distances covered by their legs. To improve performance, complete the hopping test a couple of times a week, performing extra reps on the weaker leg.

3. The Gut Check Test

Strength in the core (abdominal and lower back muscles) is very important in all sports. This is because core strength maintains stability of the upper body during movement.

If core strength is poor, the torso tends to move unnecessarily during motion, wasting energy however if core strength is good, an athlete can move with high efficiency.

Strengthen the core you will notice your movements will be much more coordinated and stable, and you should be able to run faster

4. The Flying 50 Test

Speed is important in nearly every sport, and this test is all about speed. Start with a running start of 20m and then cover 50m as fast as you possibly can (it will be helpful to have a friend or training partner time you with a stop watch).

Over the course of your season, your 50m time should gradually improve. If it doesn't, you will need to add high speed running drills to your overall programme, along with running specific strengthening routines.

By using these four tests you can monitor your endurance capacity, leg strength and power, abdominal strength and speed. This will allow you to monitor your training and fitness improvements.

    H.Y.E. N.Y.E. Party 2006

Following on from their pioneering approach to arranging youth events, to welcome 2007, the HYE committee threw the first youth only New Years Eve party. At first this had seemed a daunting task, but in the end, months of hard work and planning by the team paid off in the form of an evening all present will not forget in a hurry.

On Sunday 31st December 2006 approximately 140 Armenian youth flocked to a fabulous central London club to celebrate 2006 and welcome in 2007. The party started at 9pm and by 11pm the place was very busy. New and old friends partied until 4:30am and it was just a fantastic way to celebrate with all their friends around in such a lively, entertaining and youthful atmosphere. Not much more can be said. The photos speak for themselves!

As a first of a kind event, this was a fantastic achievement for the HYE committee and Homenetmen London. The event was well received and the attendance numbers confirmed our thoughts for the need for such a party aimed at the youth for NYE.

If you missed it... You missed out! Still, there is always next year.
