H.Y.E. Update

H.Y.E. in Armenia - Koriyaee Tzor Kindergarten

Homenetmen London's Scouting and Sports Divisions are the most obvious elements of the organisation. However, Homenetmen Youth Events, or HYE as we're widely known was born 4 years ago, and offers a more social aspect to the family. We throw parties, that's standard..... but that's not all we do.
Thanks to YOU, the great people who come to the parties we throw, we also help worthy causes. All the money from the parties we throw go to charities with an Armenian connection. In August 2006 some of the HYE crew went to Armenia and took toys, sports equipment, books and paints to Koriyaee Tzor kindergarten, in one of the most deprived areas of Yerevan. Have a look at the photos to see how YOU have helped these children, and added a bit of happiness to their lives.

We thank you all for your support.

Ladies Basketball Team - back on the scene!

After a long "time-out" (excuse the pun!), October 5th saw the Ladies Basketball Team reunite once again, forming an even stronger and more devoted group.

Our time away has certainly worked in our favour, as we have come back 9-strong, a more aggressive and enthusiastic team with a distinct passion to win.

Geneva is just a few months away and with our tenacity and hunger for victory, I am confident that we will retain our worthy title as European Champions for the fourth year running.

The last few weeks of practice have displayed some excellent and motivating play from the girls, inspiring each other to play harder and give it their best. Therefore I would like to thank the girls and Sevan for their dedication to the game and most importantly to our team.

It's great to be back!

Football Update

The Senior football team came back after the summer break and began pre-season training at the beginning of September. The new league season, due to start at the end of October at Goals, looks to be a promising one. The team, looking great in their brand new football kit, are looking at getting some games under their belt as a five-a-side team with the aspirations of progressing to an 11-a-side team in 2007.

If you're interested in joining our growing team please email Sports@Homenetmen.org.uk. The Senior players travel to Montreal for the Annual Homenetmen Canada Games in November - look out for the review in the next issue of e-Marz.

The Junior team are full of enthusiasm as usual... the technical ability of the boys is improving, and this can be clearly seen on the training pitch. The team has some friendly games and tournaments organised for the end of 2006, and we'll keep you posted on the dates so you too can see the future of Homenetmen football develop.

Men's Basketball

Following last season's under-performance in the league and the general challenge with attendance numbers, the Sports Committee has decided to give our men's basketball team a year out of the league. This will give the team an opportunity to regroup and also to see if the players can re-commit to regular training sessions.

The team is currently suffering from low attendance figures and fitness issues due to injuries and lack of training over the summer period.

As they have in the past, we are confident our men's team will bounce back stronger and more determined than ever to uphold the strong Homenetmen London tradition of men's basketball.

Watch this space!...

Top Tips

Cramps

Cramp is another common injury for athletes at all levels and affects hard working muscles such as the calves in runners and the arm in tennis players. But despite being able to cure all kinds of killer diseases, scientists still don't know what causes it!

What is cramp?
It is when a muscle goes into spasm and refuses to relax.
The pain in the affected muscle can range from a slight spasm to agonising pain. It can last a few seconds through to 15 minutes and can recur.

Why do we get cramp?
There are three major factors, although scientists are unsure how much influence each of these areas have on cramp:
  • Fatigue: Cramp sets in when our muscles are tired
  • Hydration: We get cramp when we have not drunk enough water
  • Conditioning: The less fit we are, the more likely we are to suffer from cramp

    Who does it affect?
Cramp is common in most athletes, especially long distance runners and tennis and football players.

    How does it happen?
It can set in during long bouts of exercise, particularly when the weather is hot and a player is dehydrating.

    Treatment?
The immediate treatment for muscle cramp is to stretch and gently massage the muscle. Use ice packs for severe cases and drink water or a sports drink.
Grasp the muscle with one hand and pull back on the toes with the other. Point toes upward to help relieve the spasm.
You can continue exercising after massage but if the pain is too acute then 24 hours rest is advised.

    How can you avoid cramp?
A proper warm-up (especially stretching) is essential, good fitness, plenty of fluid and a nutritious diet.
