Junior Football Season Review
The Homenetmen London Junior team, under the stewardship of Klauss Celadon, has come leaps and bounds in training this season which is held between three and four o'clock every Sunday at the Brunel sports hall. The juniors have taken huge steps this year and improved tremendously. There is so much promising talent coming through that some of the Senior players should be fearing for their places soon.
The team has competed in a variety of tournaments at the Goals complex in Wembley and have performed very well. At times the fluid movement and goal scoring form has been frightening. Their best performance so far has been third place. They have also played a number of friendlies and competitive games in Osterley organised by the coach. This has all been great match practise for our youth team, and at times they have blown their opposition away with their mesmerising skill. With each game together they are playing better football and becoming a more cohesive unit.

Senior Football Season Review
After a long absence, the Senior Football team got back to competitive football this winter, playing in the Top Corner League in Chiswick. At times the team played sexy Brazilian football, and at others committed football suicide, but as the season went on, the work ethic and cohesiveness improved dramatically. Injuries, player shortages and bad luck were the main reason games were lost, and even when they lost the team played some memorable football. The season unearthed some good young talent, including Mher Malerian who has been invited to train in front of Chelsea scouts, as well as Artak's formidable Rooney-esque shot. In fact Artak was the team's top scorer this season with 9 goals, followed closely by John Banian on 8 and Mher Malerian and Edwin Tellme on 6 each. The team finished the season in 4th place, and qualified for the Champions League. Coach Klauss can be proud of the development of his team and said "I noticed a good improvement has been achieved and a good team spirit as well. Congratulations to all of you".

Ladies Basketball
With just 10 weeks to go until the Germany 2006 tournament, the ladies basketball team has begun to focus its efforts and set its sights on a fourth consecutive European win. Twice Geneva champions and Amsterdam cup winners, the success of the team has boosted both confidence and interest in the ladies' game. With expectations set, the team has no plans to disappoint.
Men's Basketball
Just over a handful of games remain for the men's team in the First Division of the Middlesex Basketball League. In a busy schedule of games, the team continues to battle against tough competition.
The end of the league will bring no respite however as the team will return to scheduled training in preparation for the Germany 2006 tournament.
Show your support for the team by attending the league games. Please click here for their fixtures list.
New Junior Basketball Team
The Sports Committee is currently working on plans to start a junior men's team for 14-18 year olds. Coached practice sessions will take place on Sundays. We anticipate the first session to take place by the third week of February.
To register your interest please email us at Sports@Homenetmen.org.uk. We will inform you of the venue, time and date of the first session.
We hope this team will secure the future of Homenetmen London's strong basketball culture.

"It's all in the Mind" - Sport Psychology:
The increased stress of competitions can cause athletes to react both physically and mentally in a manner, which can negatively affect their performance abilities. They may become tense, their heart rates race, they break into a cold sweat, they worry about the outcome of the competition, they find it hard to concentrate on the task in hand. Certain techniques exist which athletes can use in the competitive situation to maintain control and optimise their performance. Once learned, these techniques allow the athlete to relax and to focus his/her attention in a positive manner on the task of preparing for and participating in competition.
The 4C's
Generally considered to be the main mental qualities that are important for successful performance in most sports:
Concentration - ability to maintain focus
Confidence - believe in one's abilities
Control - ability to maintain emotional control regardless of distraction
Commitment - ability to continue working to agreed goals
1. Concentration
This is the mental quality to focus on the task in hand. Common distractions are: anxiety, mistakes, fatigue, coach, opponent, negative thoughts etc.
Strategies to improve concentration are very personal. One way to maintain focus is to set goals for each session or competition. For each of these goals the athlete can use a trigger word (a word which instantly refocuses the athlete's concentration to the goal) e.g. sprinting technique requires the athlete to focus on being tall, relaxed, smooth and to drive with the elbows - trigger word could be "technique".
Athletes will develop a routine for competition which may include the night before, the morning, pre competition, competition and post competition routines. If these routines are appropriately structured then they can prove a useful aid to concentration.
2. Confidence
An athlete will have self-confidence if they believe they can achieve their goal. They will tend to: persevere even when things are not going to plan, show enthusiasm, be positive in their approach and take their share of the responsibility in success and failure.
To improve their self confidence, an athlete can visualise previous good performance to remind them of the look and feel and imagine various scenarios and how they will cope with them.
3. Control
An athlete's ability to maintain control of their emotions in the face of adversity and remain positive is essential to successful performance. Two emotions which are often associated with poor performance are anxiety and anger. Relaxation techniques (such as breathing control or the active contracting and relaxing of muscles) can be used to regain control.
4. Commitment
Sports performance depends on the athlete being fully committed to numerous goals over many years. In competition with these goals athletes have many aspects of daily life to manage, for example work, studies, family/partner, friends, social life and other hobbies/sports. Setting goals will raise an athlete’s feeling of value, give them joint ownership of the goals and therefore become more committed to achieving them. All goals should be SMART. (Specific, Measurable, Adjustable, Realistic, Time bound)
