Welcome

Hello and welcome to the tenth issue of e-Marz!

September saw the start of a new sporting season in which both the men's football and basketball teams entered local league competitions and are already progressing well in their respective league tables.

The ladies basketball team refuses to sit back quietly and in turn continues to train hard with plans to take on old league rivals in friendly games given the absence of a ladies first division league this season.

Similarly, the youth football team goes from strength to strength as it battles and progresses through tough training schedules.

The new season has kicked off in an optimistic light with teams showing true focus and a winning attitude. Read on to find out more.

Good luck to all our marzigs in the new season!

Special Word

Sirely kouyrer yev yeghbairner,

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our sports division for a solid year.

Men's Basketball
We are proud to have the men's team participating in the league again, and we hope to see good things from them this year. The facilities where the games are played are really good, and I would encourage everyone to go along and support the guys.

Ladies Basketball
The ladies team has had a good year too as we all know. They are ready to enter a league this year which will hopefully give them even more competitive practice and advantages in their game.

We are proud to have brought in the next generation of players to both the boys and the girls teams, and hope that this will bring up our fresh talent. The trend now is for more and more Inter-Homenetmen and Inter-Community games, so anyone wishing to play sports with Homenetmen has the opportunity to travel, play internationally and make new and lasting friends.

Senior Football
The men's team has joined a new league this season, and all games take place in Turnham Green. I would again highly recommend for everyone to go and support them. They are a good team.

In addition we are very pleased to announce that Homenetmen London Football will be the only Europeans playing in the North American Games in November organised in Toronto. I am sure we can teach the New World how the game is really played.

Good luck boys!

Junior Football
One of our major achievements this year has been the introduction of our junior football academy. Our coach Klauss is working on these boys to hopefully build a strong future team for Homenetmen London.

Looking forward to next year...
I would very much like to recommend to everyone involved in Homenetmen sports to work towards increasing our areas of activity in the coming year. We have this year generated interest in girl's football. We have a premier league and national team player ready to train the girls, and play with them.

We have also generated interest in table tennis and lawn tennis.

These plans have to be put into action in the coming year, and I recommend all those interested to pitch in and help Homenetmen London Sports to get these new endeavours off the ground.

I would also like to hear from anyone interested in Yoga/Pilates or Personal Training regimes. I feel we could also provide this service to our community through Homenetmen.
Finally, I would like to thank our coaches for their undying belief and work with the teams. I would like to thank all the people responsible for making the sports happen, and all the people who helped finance our teams through the various fundraising activities they organised this year.

Thank you, without you all life would have been a lot tougher.

Oh and one last thing! We need to look for new facilities where we can carry out our activities. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail sports@homenetmen.org.uk with any ideas or suggestions.

On behalf of Homenetmen London Executive Committee,
Fred Hairabedyan

Marzagan News

Senior Football
The 2005/2006 Senior Football season began in September with a positive boost. The football team are participating in the Top Corner 5-a-side league in Chiswick this season, and with trips to the Homenetmen Games in Toronto plus the European Games in Germany coming up, the team has plenty of opportunities to impress this year.

Having played two pre-season friendlies and comfortably winning both, the team entered the league with high spirits. Now four games into the season and with Homenetmen only 4 points off the top of the table having already played the top two teams, the squad could be having a very merry Christmas this year.

If you're interested in watching the team play on Tuesday nights in Chiswick, you can see the full fixture list by clicking here. We value your support.

Ladies Basketball Team - A Supporters Thought
It was my first time watching our ladies team playing a game at the Osterley campus. Heads were down, anger in the air, but there was something in their eyes, something I couldn't understand initially but at the end of the game it was clear to me those eyes were hungry for trophies...

In a world such as ours, games are not for fun, games are there to be won... and I followed them like every hard core supporter (the team from the quiet courts of Osterley campus) to Geneva, Amsterdam and back to Geneva - the road of their success.

Yes, three tournaments, three victories, the Homenetmen Ladies team made it clear to Europe "VENI VIDI VICI".
I watched them working hard, running, defending, attacking and fighting for every ball. They acted upon their coach's demands and delivered. It wasn't the coach, it was those eyes and the belief that they had, still have and will always have, because they should. They owe it to themselves and they owe it to Homenetmen.

I was in Geneva during the final seconds of their final game and I could see the tears in their eyes, waiting for the last foul shot to be taken so they could drink to their victory from the trophy that they had worked hard for. Together they cried and shouted victory!

It was so beautiful; I wanted to keep the moment for ever. I walked away and felt so proud but hungry for more and I am sure they too are hungry for more and are eager for the next tournament. Our ladies victory has echoed all around the world.

Men's Basketball
The Men's Basketball team has just started its new season in the MBL 1st Division. The focus this season is for commitment and consistency. We have a core group of 10 players that we are aiming to build the team around. The plan is to achieve success through teamwork and thereby attract new talent to take the team forward from where it is today.

Coach Pete Deppisch has played a big role in stamping out negativity from the team and he has managed to instil belief into every player. Belief that we are good enough to win this league and belief that we can achieve much more than we thought possible.

The Middlesex League has adopted a new format this season where all the games are being played at Brunel University in Uxbridge. It's still early days to know whether this format will be successful, however the spectator facilities are much better and we should encourage our supporters to come and cheer the team. Click here for a full schedule of our games and further information on the league.

Top Tips

TEAMWORK
When a team makes a commitment to act as one, the sky's the limit. It is the work of the team which determines success.

1. Define the aim of your group:
  • What are you trying to achieve?
  • Why are you trying to achieve this?
  • How are you going to reach your goal?

    2. Know the team:
  • What are their individual strengths and weaknesses?
  • What qualities do individuals have that could affect the group?
  • How can you all work together to use each others skills?

    3. Be open minded:
  • Be able to listen to others as well as argue your point
  • Be able to accept when you are wrong
  • Be able to give and take criticism constructively

    4. Work beyond conflict:
  • Keep the aim in sight
  • Leave personal issues outside
  • Be motivated enough to work as a team under any circumstances
