Marzagan News

Men's MBL results
The Middlesex Basketball League results were posted this month showing RHUL as this season's champions. Well done to all our team players who committed to playing in the 2002-2003 league games, bringing the Homenetmen Men's team to the MBL First Division League Tables.

Coaching Achievement
Congratulations to the ladies basketball team coach, Sevan Artin, for passing his coaching exams and achieving Level 2 certification.

Men's Football Friendly
On Sunday 13th April Homenetmen London football team played host to a Spanish team at Brunel's University Sports Hall in Osterley. After a sluggish start and some fine play from the visitors, Homenetmen were trailing 8-4 going into the last ten minutes. As Time started to run out Homenetmen stepped up a gear and scored four quick goals but still ran out losers 8-9. Therefore the Spaniards gained revenge for defeat in the corresponding fixture the week before. Despite this defeat there were several good performances and the team continues to improve.

Go-Karting Glory
One Sunday afternoon, a group of 14 Homenetmen members met at the Daytona Raceway Track in Acton, Park Royal, one of the UK's premier indoor karting arenas. The smell of octane filled the air as one by one, the drivers entered the pits and the race was on. It was an exhilarating race in a superb venue. Amid black flags, controversy and suspect overtaking manoeuvres the race ended with the following results: Sevag Dadourian in 1st place, Edvin Davidian in 2nd and Andre Dadayan in 3rd. We look forward to the next group of challengers!

Go-Karting
No time was wasted as the second group of challengers stepped forward on Sunday 27th April and the race was on once again. Congratulations to the latest round of winners:
Armen Saboonchian 1st place, Armand Abramian 2nd place and Sergio Chirkinian 3rd place.

Marzagan goes to Chico Mexico...
On Sunday 23rd February Marzagan Khorhoort together with Kevork Ohanian organised a sizzling evening of food and drinks at Chico Mexico in Ealing. The aim of the dinner was to gather all the Geneva goers under one roof to go through the ins and outs of the tournament as well as to create more interaction amongst our marzigs. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Kevork for allowing us to use his restaurant for this occasion and for designing a special 'Homenetmen Dinner Menu'. Kevork we'd also like to thank you for your ongoing classic one-liners!

Scouts Day Table Display
At the annual Scouts Day event on March 15th 2002, 'Marzagan', along-side H.Y.E. set up a table display to promote its events and activities with the aim of attracting more members to take part in the sports division.

Top Tips

Stay Injury Free!
How to avoid most strains and overuse injuries:
However fit you are or experienced as an athlete, it is always best to progress your training gradually and introduce all new training with care. To reduce risk of injury, increases in training volume or intensity and new exercises or workouts should be phased in gradually.

Most strain and overuse injuries occur when the athlete has done too much too soon.

Top 5 Injury Prevention Tips:
1. Avoid training when you are tired. Tired muscles provide inadequate support for tendons, ligaments, and bones, increasing the risk of strains, sprains, and stress fractures.

2. Make sure that you increase your consumption of carbohydrate during periods of heavy training. Muscles which are low on carbohydrate are tired muscles, leading to the problem mentioned in Tip No. 1.

3. Continuing to build on the 'fatigue produces injury' theme, bear in mind that increases in training necessitate increases in resting, too. Anytime your training volume increases by more than 2-3 per cent, you need to make sure that you're getting more sleep and taking more time to rest during the day.

4. Be especially careful if you're a relative newcomer to your sport. If you've only been participating in it for a few months, you're much more likely to be injured, compared to someone who's been active for several years, simply because the latter individual has had more time to strengthen the appropriate muscles and connective tissues.

5. Treat even seemingly minor injuries very carefully to prevent them from blowing up into big problems. Remember the time-honoured acronym RICE -- Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation -- when a small injury strikes. Rest gives the afflicted area time to heal, ice reduces inflammation and swelling, and compression and elevation lessen swelling, promoting healing.

    Sponsorship

Through the years Homenetmen strives to develop the moral character of young Armenian-Britons with the intent that each becomes a model citizen in their respective communities.

The terrific success of Homenetmen scouting and sports activities is largely due to the continual moral and financial support of dedicated parents, organisations and generous individuals who have been instrumental in supporting the continuation of existing, and the introduction of new, activities.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr & Mrs Tenjoukian, Mr & Mrs Tatevossian, Mr & Mrs Katsouris (Cypressa) and every individual and organisation that have continuously been supporting us in so many ways.
